Explore Your Futures Design Thinking Workshops

Committente: Associazione Forum Rimini Venture

Progettazione e conduzione workshop: Omar Vulpinari

2023

–Quali futuri alternativi potrei avere?
–Quali possibili futuri desidero e quali preferisco evitare?

Service Design and Brand Communication for Japanese National Social Services

For: Japanese Welfare Ministry,
The Nippon Foundation

Creative Direction: Omar Vulpinari,
Aaron Siegel
Design: Samantha Ziino (vehicle), David Penuela (data system concept), Anna Kulacheck (app GUI)
Agency: Fabrica
2013

The project was commissioned by the Nippon Foundation, a private non-profit philanthropic organization active in Japan and around the world in the fields of social welfare, education and public health.

The brief asked for a brand enhancing visual design for 2000 Japanese social service vehicles. The aim of the design was first to make the Japanese society more aware of the importance and magnitude of social service work, and second, to motivate the social workers using the cars.

Social work and volunteering is fundamentally about “working together”—this thought inspired the design—whether it be working with colleagues, or with the people receiving care. People joining to help the lives of others. Using the existing Nippon Foundation logo, the design creates a chain of people holding hands embracing the passengers with joy and care. The faces are smiling and the hands are high in the air in an expression of celebration.

A data visualisation service—a video display on top of the car fed by a smartphone app operated by the driver—was also conceived (but not implemented). The system could communicate, to people on the streets, qualitative and quantitative information on the social services offered. This would create value in terms of informed awareness on the magnitude of the impact of the social workers' services.

The 50th anniversary celebrations of Icograda (International Council of Communication Design) in 2013 were marked by this customizable logo sytem used by Icograda's 200 member associations for all the initiatives of this historical event.

The basic shape of the logo is an interpretation of the number 50 inspired by old world maps structured on dual globes giving a complete view of all continents: a clear reference to Icograda's broader mission to support all design cultures globally.

The most significant and original aspect of the system is its customizable and multicultural nature: while maintaining its core identity, it can be adapted by each of the 200 Icograda members around the world, who can add expressions relating to their local visual culture, such as images, typography, calligraphy, and decorations.

The logo also has an official version in black and white to be used exclusively by Icograda for its centralised branding requirements.

Icograda is the world body for professional communication design. It is a non-profit, non-partisan network of independent organisations working within the scope of communication design and expanded media. Founded in 1963, Icograda actively promotes the value of design practice, thinking, education and research, representing more than 200 organisations in 67 countries and regions globally.

The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2009 was “Show the truth: picture health warnings save lives”. UNWHO commissioned a global campaign to urge worldwide national decision-makers to apply pictorial health warnings on all packages of tobacco products. These warnings more effectively inform smokers about the dangers of tobacco, specially in countries with low literacy rates. Governments should not just tell the truth about how tobacco sickens and kills prematurely, they should show the truth also by requiring the placement of pictorial health warnings on packs of tobacco. Each poster surrealistically
communicates the pictorial warnings’ main goal: to not just tell the truth, but show it.

The show deals with the actual preparations of many western countries, headed by the US, to fight expected major civil unrest as a result of the global financial crisis. Troups around the world are training now in mock-up inner city areas. Art and Poster: Omar Vulpinari
2009

Exhibition held at the Akademie der Künste Berlin,
24 January - 22 March 2009

Curators Janneke Schönenbach e Olaf Arndt invited international artists to create work on the theme of “security” after 9/11. Along with the main exhibition there was a parallel poster-based initiative with six internationally reknown graphic artists (Jonathan Barnbrook, Neville Brody, Fons Hickmann, Gunter Rambow, Yuko Shimizu, Omar Vulpinari) that expaned the project into the city.

Vulpinari’s poster was inspired by Cerberum, the two headed dog at the gates of Dante's Inferno. The ambiguos guard dog reminds of the dual consequences of security and surveillance today.

------------

Vulpinari contributed his “Cerberum” as a “brand symbol” to the robot art-project of Schönenbach, Vaupel e Arndt.
